DOES GOOD POSTURE REALLY MATTER?

THE RECOVERY REPORT

Many people believe poor posture is responsible for their pain.

They worry about sitting incorrectly, standing incorrectly or moving incorrectly.

The reality is often more complex.

THERE IS NO PERFECT POSTURE

Research has not identified a single ideal posture that prevents pain.

People can sit, stand and move in a variety of ways without developing symptoms.

What matters more is the ability to change position regularly.

THE BODY LIKES VARIETY

Staying in one position for prolonged periods can become uncomfortable regardless of whether that position appears “good” or “bad”.

The body generally tolerates movement and variation better than prolonged static postures.

PAIN IS MULTIFACTORIAL

Pain is influenced by many factors including:

  • Activity levels
  • Stress
  • Sleep
  • Previous injury
  • Physical conditioning
  • Work demands

Posture is only one small piece of a much larger picture.

CONFIDENCE IN MOVEMENT MATTERS

Many people become fearful of moving because they believe they are damaging themselves.

In reality, the body is adaptable and resilient.

Encouraging normal movement is often more helpful than constantly trying to achieve perfect posture.

Recovery Principle

The best posture is usually the next posture.
